As the Microsoft develop their platform, they are adding more gadgets and additional tweaks on your PC to make the Windows interface more pleasant but some of them might slow down your computer speed performance. Microsoft all over the years really attempt and tried to assure that the Windows will be able to handle lots of gadgets without sacrificing the computer’s speed.
There are different instruction for different Operating System as follows:
For Windows Xp, Vista:
1. Click Start and go to the Control Panel >
2. Click on the System >
3. Under the Advance tab, Click the Settings button under the Performance >
4. Under the Visual Effects Tab you should see some options to check/mark :
For Windows 2000/95:
1. Click on start and go to the Control Panel >
2. Click on Display Properties
3. Click on Effects-tab
You must only consider and check the following:
· Show shadows under menus
· Show shadows under mouse pointer
· Smooth edges of screen fonts
· User drop shadows for icon labels on desktop
· Use visual styles on windows and buttons
· Show translucent selection rectangle
· Show window contents while dragging

Disabling the background images on your desktop might also speed up your computer a bit, because it also use memory and takes CPU time ( for windows 95, stretching the wallpaper background might slowdown your computer too). To change your background wallpaper go to the desktop, right click on anywhere then properties tab > Click on the Desktop tab > then Browse an image > apply then ok. It is still up to you to sacrifice a bit of computer’s performance to tweak up your computer.
